What is a T shirt? A T-shirt, also known as a Tee, is usually a short sleeved shirt, pulled on over the head to cover the better part of the upper body of the person who is wearing it. T shirts have no buttons, collars or pockets, and usually come with a round neck. A Tee is typically sewn of cotton or polyester (or both), knitted in a jersey stitch giving it the unique T shirt feeling. T-shirts can be printed on with almost any graphical element, and in various printing methods.
How are T shirts Printed? Tees may be printed in several ways. The most important thing to know about t-shirt printing is that high quality and multi-color prints (which usually involve screen printing) are cost effective only when printed in (relatively) large numbers. So, before you go and decide that you want to print your art on a tee, you’d better think about the number of tees you would like to produce and the number of different colors you would like to include in the print.
Since we are into quality, all of Zigel’s T shirts are screen printed.
Basically, screen printing uses a stencil made of a fine mesh through which ink is forced on to the fabric. The stencil may be created in various ways, the most popular of which would be exposing the mesh (covered with a light sensitive chemical) to a strong light source whilst keeping the mesh unexposed to the light in the places through which ink is to pass. To make a long story short, this means that the print has to be divided into distinct colors, while a stencil is created for each of the desired colors. What are T shirts made of? Preferably, Tees are made of ringspun combed cotton. “Ringspun” is the name of the process used to knit the fabric. There are many different methods used to do this, however, ringspun gives the fabric a soft (but durable) texture. Combed cotton is made by specially treating the cotton fibers before they are spun into yarn. This process yields an extremely soft but strong material which feels nice when, in this case the Tee, is worn against the skin.
