Why do T-shirts Shrink?

OK look. Good cotton shrinks. Period. Even preshrunk cotton shrinks during the first wash. If a t-shirt does not shrink at all, it is probably not 100% cotton (e.g. the fabric contains some form of polyester or nylon). Therefore, the best fabric to make a t-shirt from (usually ring spun cotton) will cause the product to shrink somewhat. 2-3% shrinkage is what you should expect. See how to buy a T-shirt to use this knowledge.

These are the popular reasons to why t-shirts shrink:

During washing, the cotton fibers absorb water which causes them to swell. This shortens their length. Quickly drying wet fiber retains the new length that the fabric has shrunk into.

Pre shrinking the cotton involves washing the fabric and pushing the fibers together (professionals call this – compaction). The actual process that the fabric goes through in the washing machine (rubbing against your jeans and socks) will continue the compaction to a certain extent.

To avoid over shrinking follow these instruction:

1.  Buy quality products. They will shrink, but less.
2.  Follow the washing instructions.

These following instructions are standard for washing screenprinted ring spun 100% cotton T-shirts:

1. The temperature should be no higher than 30c/86f.

2. Go easy on the spinning speed if you can control it (No Spin - 400 is enough).

3. Don't tumble dry.

4. Don't dry clean (chemicals may ruin the print).

5. Don't iron when still wet.

Please note: all of the above are mere suggestions. This is not the result of an empirically tested scientific research. Take good care of your clothing. Follow the manufacturers' instructions.

Now that you know why they shrink, you migh like to
buy a t-shirt.
